Dolium

Inspired by the archaeological theme of the Contreie district, Jeroen Verdaasdonk (javydesign), in collaboration with MX3D, has created a distinctive structural art object for Vrachelsplein: a modern interpretation of a Roman Dolium. Traditionally used to store goods like grain, the Dolium’s cylindrical shape has been reimagined into an open, interactive structure where residents can walk through, sit, or gather.

This project honors Oosterhout’s pottery heritage while bridging the new Contreie district with the city’s rich history.

Using a hybrid approach—traditional methods combined with 3D metal printing by MX3D—the Dolium is both innovative and sustainable. Made from CorTen steel, it stands as the largest 3D-printed structural art object in the Netherlands, with minimal waste, efficient production, and low CO2 emissions.
