WAAM FOR AUTOMOTIVE

Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) is a reliable, repeatable and scalable 3D metal printing technology for manufacturing metal components in the automotive industry. WAAM has high material efficiency, strong mechanical properties and is suitable for serial production of medium to large metal parts.

AUTOMOTIVE

INDUSTRY VALUE

The automotive market, with over 80 million vehicles produced every year, is characterised by a high level of competition and continuous innovation. Part performance and cost per part are key, driving a constant cycle of optimization in part designs and frequent reevaluation of manufacturing technologies. Even marginal savings of a few hundred grams or euros on a part can have significant implications in mass production contexts.

MX3D’s WAAM technology represents a significant advancement in the automotive industry, allowing for the production of high-quality, cost-effective components with exceptional design flexibility.

KEY BENEFITS

SERIAL PRODUCTION

Reduce supplier dependency and cost.
Boost on site production capability.
Print parts in parallel batches.

LOWERING INVENTORY COSTS

Reduce part count and volume.
Lower minimum order quantity.
Digital inventory.

SPEED & QUALITY

Short lead time with excellent material quality.
Fast and flexible production with less material.
INDUSTRY APPLICATION

WHEEL BRACKET

Due to their unique designs, custom large-scale metal parts are very costly to manufacture with conventional processes (e.g. CNC, casting) and can involve extensive lead time.

WAAM allows manufacturing unique parts with any weldable alloy in a fast, cost-effective, and sustainable way

SUSPENSION STRUT SUPPORT

As struts provide structural support for vehicle suspension, the mechanical properties of this fully WAAM-printed aluminium part are essential to bear the intense forces critical to vehicle handling, control and stability. Next to the optimised design, lower component weight, enhanced production efficiency and functional performance, using WAAM results in lower energy requirements and improved material usage.

Compared to other 3D metal printing technologies, WAAM has proven suitable for medium to larger structural components as these components can now be manufactured faster.

“It’s impressive to see how WAAM technology has developed from research to become a flexible tool for not only test components but also series production components. The use of generative design methods enables us to make full use of design freedom and thus the potential of the technology. That was unthinkable just a few years ago,” said Karol Virsik, Head of BMW Group Vehicle Research.

CERTIFICATION & QUALIFICATION

CERTIFICATION

QUALIFIED SYSTEM

MX3D produces parts with constant mechanical properties comparable to those of cast or wrought material. MX3D follows the available standards, like API20S  and DNV ST-B203, that apply to Metal 3D printing for the Energy Sector.  We work closely with  Lloyd’s Register, The Welding Institute, DNV GL, and Bureau Veritas to qualify our parts and machines. The services we provide are:

  • Set up and qualify DPS (Deposition Parameter Sets)
  • 3.1 / 3.2 certificate weld wires
  • Material characterisation and qualification (external certified supplier)
