M1 Metal AM System – User Story

Shimoda (Japan)

Turnkey solution for printing with WAAM

We are very excited to announce the first MX3D M1 Metal AM System going to Japan!

The M1 will be installed at the Shimoda Iron Works Co., Ltd. factory site in Aioi-City, Hyogo, Japan. The M1 Metal AM System acquisition is part of the collaboration agreement between the two companies.

The deployment of the M1 follows a joint project between MX3D and Takenaka Corporation, one of the biggest Japanese construction companies, for the production of duplex stainless steel structural connectors. The organic shapes and varied geometries made Robotic Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) an optimal choice for manufacturing in a waste-free, fast and cost-effective way. After the successful project, Shimoda decided to invest in the technology and it intends to produce these metal nodes on-site.

The M1 Metal AM System allows us to start printing optimized parts for various industries including wind power industry immediately. We were impressed by the ease of use and the quality of the materials. Moreover, this new process is much attractive for us because it will contribute to SDGs by minimizing both material and energy loss. MX3D’s M1 makes Shimoda the nr. 1 expert in robotic WAAM in Japan, a technology that we believe will see a bright future,” says Shinji Shimoda – president of Shimoda Iron Works Co. Ltd.

Shimoda also offers their printing services to the offshore wind market, which requires a high performance for large complex metal parts. Windmill parts need consistent serial production with high deposit rates, in short, a good match with the MX3D WAAM technology. By digitizing and reshoring their production, the wind turbine industry becomes less dependent on foreign casting and forging companies with extensive lead times. By internalizing the manufacturing, the company regains control over the quality and is able to quickly iterate with new innovations and changing demands. Shimoda will be present at the annual WIND EXPO in Tokyo, Japan, between the 16th-18th of March 2022.

M1 METAL AM SYSTEM

The M1 Metal AM System is MX3D’s turnkey solution to print with robotic wire arc additive manufacturing, a large-scale 3D metal printing process based on the layer-by-layer build-up of conventional MIG/MAG welding processes.

This fully-equipped WAAM system is composed of an enclosed off-the-shelf welding robot and is integrated with the MX3D’s MetalXL software and MetalXL Control System. With 8 degrees of freedom and all essential sensors, this system provides the full WAAM workflow and includes advanced CAM, print monitoring, and post-manufacturing data analytics.

WAAM is industry ready and it is exciting to see a company like Shimoda apply this technology in various industries. I am proud that Shimoda, a company with a clear focus on high productivity, chose the M1 by MX3D. It validates our focus on building an industrial machine capable of running continuous productions efficiently thanks to the control of our monitoring system,” says Gijs van der Velden, CEO of MX3D. “MX3D focuses on creating an easy to use, industry-grade 3D metal printer, against a very competitive price point. Shimoda’s acquisition of the M1 Metal AM System shows that the use of 3D metal printers is not limited anymore to aerospace and Formula1. Now the technology finally has become available for productions at metalworking companies all over the world, and with that, the founding vision of MX3D – to scale up 3D metal printing and make it available for all high impact industries – is becoming a reality. Exciting stuff!

Shimoda is specialized in the production of forged flanges and fittings for oil & gas and energy industries. Traditionally using forging and CNC machining, the implementation of WAAM will allow them to optimize the production of medium-to-large scale custom components and organic geometries, by cutting lead time, costs, and waste.

By pioneering in this investigation of the benefits of WAAM for Japanese industries, Shimoda helps the market to complete their transition towards a 4.0 industry. They will accomplish this not only by printing existing components in a more efficient manner, but this technology will also transform design possibilities. The innovation potential that it unlocks is high and will strengthen the competitiveness of the Japanese manufacturing sector.

Industry Application

Duplex Steel Structural Connector

Together with Takenaka Corporation, this project shows the progress in the production of highly customized and engineered steel connectors using robotic WAAM, with the goal to automate both the design and production of complex components for large structures in the architecture industry.

The Duplex stainless steel Connector’s net weight is 40Kg reaching up to 45Kg after its hollow core was filled with approximately 2.5 liters of mortar.
