RESEARCH

With over 35,000 kg of metal 3D-printed metal objects and over 75 man-years of experience since 2014, MX3D is the company that brought large-scale robotic wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) and its market to life by incorporating research to fulfil international standards and requirements.

MX3D is the innovation leader in 3D metal printing by encompassing knowledge across various industries and materials.

OPEN INNOVATION PLATFORM

PIONEER

Today’s globalised market has created various challenges for European manufacturing companies. To overcome those, EU companies are called to adopt technologies that will help them adapt and improve product quality while reducing costs.

Smart manufacturing can transform traditional factories into high-performance plants with increased productivity and quality, resource efficiency, and flexibility in production. At the same time, novel product development strategies will ensure and optimise the efficient manufacturing of new products or variants in low-volume production systems.

FUTURE ORIENTED HERITAGE APPROACH

TRACKS 4 CRAFTS

Forging A Hybrid Craft for Metals aims to create awareness in the Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) methodology for the metal craft ecosystem by creating a pool of informed and trained professionals to support the future demand of WAAM produced goods.

ZERO DEFECTS MANUFACTURING

ZDMP

ZDMP (Zero Defects Manufacturing Platform) offers an open Industry 4.0 environment for a new generation of zero-defect service applications for manufacturing.

The research focuses on developing a solution to address consistency problems in robotic AM to achieve zero-defect additive manufacturing.

This project has received cascading funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 825631.

RESEARCH & COLLABORATION

INTEGRADDE

The goal of INTEGRADDE is to develop a novel end-to-end solution capable of demonstrating the potential of Directed Energy Deposition (DED) processes for the manufacturing of certified large metal components in strategic metalworking sectors.

INTEGRADDE seeks the real application of additive manufacturing in the European industrial environment by involving 26 partners from 11 countries and with a budget of close to 17 million euros.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 820776.

AEC INDUSTRY APPLICATION

ADDOPTML

ADDOPTML aims to create and test holistic machine learning to aid the optimum design-manufacturing process of civil structures.

This research focuses on developing AM products in the Architectural, Engineering & Construction Industry (AECI) due to its potential for flexible and automated production of complex geometry objects, in combination with minimizing the time required to develop new products.

RESEARCH & COLLABORATION

WELD GALAXY

This project aims to build an automated calibration module that can effectively determine welding parameters for various layer dimensions.

Weld Galaxy is a B2B online platform that will connect global buyers and EU sellers of welding equipment along with auxiliaries/consumables and services.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement 822106.

CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY

TAKENAKA STRUCTURAL STEEL CONNECTOR

A privately funded prototype research by the Japanese construction company Takenaka Corporation.

For more than two years, both partners have been working together to design, optimize and print an organic, advanced-shaped prototype for structural steel connectors. With Takenaka focusing on new designs and having deep knowledge of the industry requirements, MX3D takes care of the advanced digital manufacturing process and the 3D metal printing process.

This project aims to automate both the design and production of complex connectors for large structures in the building industry.

OIL & GAS INDUSTRY

WAAM CLAMP

The project on hybrid metal AM aims to reduce production lead time for repairing pipeline leakages.

A collaborative demonstration by MX3D, TEAM, and TIAT to investigate the potential of hybrid WAAM in the oil and gas industry.

The research has been funded by Trinity EU and the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 820776.

MARITIME INDUSTRY

ALUMINIUM BOAT

MX3D partners with KM Yachtbuilding for their expertise in building and designing boats to conduct the prototyping of aluminum boat parts via Robotic Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing.

As skilled welders become scarce and customisation the standard, yacht builders like KMY are looking for innovative methods to produce their unique parts efficiently and cost-effective.

This project is partly funded by Rijksdienst voor Ondernemend Nederland (RVO) with the SME innovation stimulation subsidy by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate.

RESEARCH & COLLABORATION

MOBILE WAAM ROBOT

The 3D Building Field Lab conducted the research in collaboration with MX3D, TU Delft, and the Amsterdam Institute of Advanced Metropolitan Solutions.

A team at the Technical University of Delft 3D printed a stainless steel truss tower of over 2 meters as a prototype to produce a larger structure than a single robot arm can reach.

The robot arm provided by MX3D was fixed onto a set of tracks which made the arm mobile and increased the work volume exponentially.

RESEARCH & COLLABORATION

MATERIAL RESEARCH

Through extensive research, MX3D produces parts with mechanical properties comparable to those of cast or wrought material. By adopting new and existing international standards, MX3D manages the quality of parts for various industries and applications by collaborating with partners all across the world:

DALHOUSIE UNIVERSITY

MX3D has deployed its first M1 Metal AM system in Canada, at Dalhousie University.

The system was successfully installed in January 2023 – making Dalhousie one of the top WAAM service providers in the country for various innovative projects, including R&D for the higher learning institute campus, in Halifax.

The university’s upcoming WAAM projects include the manufacturing of R&D for major architecture, engineering, and construction industries. They will also use the technology for development testing on materials for components within manufacturing industries. Dalhousie is currently employing this technology in related AM applications in Nova Scotia.
